GEORGE TOWN, Sept 4 ― Penang will celebrate its first Park(ing) Day this September 19 and it is now open for participants to apply and claim a space to turn it green for that day.
The event, organised by Penang Institute and sponsored by the Penang Island Municipal Council, will be held in the George Town world heritage site.
In the event, on-street parking spaces across the heritage zone will be temporarily “reclaimed” and transformed into parks.
The event is aimed at pointing out the need for more public space, to improve the quality of urban habitat and to create awareness about how public space is created and allocated.
Those interested may now register online and they stand a chance to win attractive prizes including a prize for the best Instagram picture for that day.
Participants will also be competing for the RM2,000 cash prize.
Park(ing) Day was originally created in 2005 by Rebar, an art and design studio based in San Francisco to raise civic awareness on urban amenities.
Registration for the event closes on September 11.
To register online, go to mygeorgetown.my.
Citizens and community groups are invited to claim these 18ft x 8ft (5.4m x 2.4m) lots to create vibrant green spaces with their own items and materials and win attractive cash prizes.
According to Stuart MacDonald, head of urban studies for event organisers Penang Institute, interested parties can still register online at
mygeorgetown.my by Sept 11.
“It's free and green carpets the size of the lots will be provided as the base. We encourage participants to use recycled or re-purposed items to decorate them.
“In addition, they can also bring their spaces to life by adding activities like singing, acting, dancing, games or even story-telling.
“Judging will be based on the most creative use of materials and space,” he said in an interview on Wednesday.
